Our Mission
Founded in 2026, Tasking Tails is a nonprofit dedicated to making service dog training more accessible and affordable. We provide virtual education and support to help disabled people confidently train their own service dogs.
Our goal is to build a complete, step by step online curriculum that guides handlers from choosing and preparing for a service dog through advanced training and public access. As we continue building this curriculum, we also offer virtual lessons so handlers can receive personalized training and support from wherever they live.
The Struggles
Service dog training is out of reach for too many people.
Getting a service dog can be life changing. Actually getting access to the training needed to make that possible is another story.
A fully trained service dog can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Owner training can make that much more affordable, but finding good help is not always easy. Qualified trainers may be hours away, private lessons costs add up quickly to thousands and thousands, and many disabled people are already balancing limited time, energy, transportation, and finances.
Then there is the information problem. One trainer says one thing, social media says another, and suddenly you're spending more time figuring out who to trust than actually training your dog. There is an overwhelming amount of information online, but very little of it gives owner trainers a clear path from “Where do I even start?” to a reliably trained service dog.
We believe we can do something better. Quality service dog education should not depend on where you live, how much money you have, or your ability to piece together an entire training program on your own.
How We'll Help
Before starting Tasking Tails, I completed a diploma in Canine Behavior Science and Technology, earned multiple professional dog training certifications, and spent years training service dogs and their handlers.
Over time, I realized that much of service dog training can be broken into a clear, repeatable, step by step system. The details may change, but the core process stays consistent. Service dog training is expensive because skilled one on one labor is expensive. By turning that knowledge into structured online courses, we can lower the cost substantially without lowering the quality of the education.
Virtual learning also removes major barriers. Location matters less, travel is reduced, and handlers can pause, replay, and learn at their own pace.

How It Works
Our virtual lessons happen over video call, so you can train from home while getting real time support. You can ask questions, show us what you and your dog are working on, and watch demonstrations using our own service dogs when helpful. After the call, we can send resources and next steps so you know what to keep practicing.
Our online courses are currently being built and will be completely self paced. Lessons will be short, easy to digest, and supported with comprehension quizzes and video tutorials that show training techniques step by step.
Course members will also have access to group support calls and a way to ask questions as they work through the material.
You get the flexibility of online learning without being left to figure everything out alone.

What training methods do you use?
We focus on a relationship-based approach. We teach first, build understanding, and then add accountability where it’s appropriate. The goal is a dog that understands what to do, not one that’s just being controlled.
A big part of that is clear communication between you and your dog. We use a game-based style with practical training games you can actually use in real life, so it’s easier (and honestly more fun) for both of you.
If you’re a bit of a dog nerd and like knowing the “why” behind things, we follow the LIMA training methodology, which is the standard across major professional training organizations… but don’t worry, we’ll keep it simple unless you want to go full nerd with us.
Are you certified dog trainers?
Yes! Tasking Tails was created after more than five years of running a successful in person dog training company specializing in service dogs, behavior modification, puppies, and obedience. Before bringing our education online, we had already helped hundreds of dogs and handlers through private lessons, board and train programs, and virtual coaching.
Our founder holds multiple professional certifications, including CPDT KA, IACP, AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator, and additional certifications in canine nutrition, canine fitness, and canine behavior. We also hold a formal diploma in Canine Behavior Science and Technology and continue our education to stay current with the latest research and best practices.
We believe credentials matter, but so does real world experience. Everything we teach is based on years of working directly with dogs and their handlers, not just theory.
What accessibility features do you have in your courses?
Yes! Accessibility is a core part of how we design our courses. Every lesson is offered as either an easy to read written guide or a video with closed captions. You can learn at your own pace, revisit lessons as often as you need, and work through short, manageable sections instead of long, overwhelming lectures. We also use visuals, real world examples, downloadable resources, and quizzes to support different learning styles.
If you ever get stuck, you can ask questions along the way. We also recognize that every service dog team is different, so we discuss how training may need to be adapted based on your disability, your dog, and your individual goals. Our goal is to make high quality service dog education as accessible, practical, and inclusive as possible.
I’ve tried training before and it didn’t really help. What makes this different?
Many of our students have said the same thing. Often, the problem isn't a lack of effort. It's that they were given inconsistent advice, generic training plans, or guidance from trainers who have little or no experience training service dogs. Service dog training is a specialized field with unique standards, public access expectations, and legal considerations that go far beyond general obedience.
Our courses provide a clear, structured roadmap built specifically for owner trained service dogs. We focus on practical, real world skills, explain the reasoning behind what we teach, and are here to answer questions if you get stuck. Even if you've tried training before, having guidance that's designed specifically for service dog teams can make all the difference.
What is a service dog?
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service dog is "a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The task(s) performed by the dog must be directly related to the person's disability."
Service dogs can assist people with physical, psychiatric, and other disabilities by performing specific trained tasks such as guiding, medical alerting, mobility assistance, allergen alert, interrupting harmful behaviors, or retrieving items. Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort, companionship, or emotional support do not meet the ADA's definition of a service dog.
How do I know if a service dog is right for me?
That's one of the most common questions we get, and the answer isn't always straightforward.
Not every dog is suited for service work, and not every person who could benefit from a service dog should pursue one.
That's why we created a free course to help you decide. We'll walk you through whether a service dog is the right fit for your lifestyle and disability, how to evaluate whether your current dog has the right temperament, and, if you're still looking, what to look for in a service dog prospect. Our goal is to help you make an informed decision before investing months or years into training.
